The Guardian's Tale

“I am — I was — a guardian,” Sera says. Outside, the violet thunder rolls on and on. “In my world, the sky between your land and mine is stitched shut, and the knot that holds every stitch is a charm called the Storm Pearl. It was my duty to keep it. I am the youngest guardian the Dawn Herd has ever trusted, and on my ninety-ninth night of watching—” her voice cracks like a bell dropped on stone, “—the storm came.”

“Somebody made this storm?”

“Vespera.” Sera says the name the way you'd touch a bruise. “The Thorn Queen. She was a guardian once, long ago, until she tried to keep the sky's magic for her own — and it withered her. Every part of her that was unicorn turned to briars and grey smoke. She tore this hole between our worlds to reach the Pearl. I fled with it. I fell through. And I dropped it, Madison — somewhere between her hands and yours, the Storm Pearl is lost.”

Far away, out beyond the orchard, something howls. It does not sound like a dog. It sounds like wind forced through teeth.

“Her wolves,” Sera whispers. “Made of storm-smoke. Where their paws touch, color dies. They followed me through — and they can smell my mane like you can smell rain coming.”
