The Brightness Brigade

Finn names it, of course. He names everything. By sundown the plan has a title (the Brightness Brigade), a headquarters (the hayloft), a logo (a sun wearing sunglasses, drawn seventeen times on seventeen different notebook pages until it was right), and a founding discovery, tested and confirmed: brightness pushes the grey back. His harmonica un-greyed a doormat of meadow. Your mom's whistling song, hummed at the fence line, un-greyed a whole tangle of wild roses.

What it doesn't have is soldiers. Two kids and a hidden unicorn cannot out-shine a tide.

“Every kid in Maple Hollow,” Finn says, pacing the hayloft like a tiny general. “Tilly can paint. The Okafor brothers have a drum kit. Priya's grandmother taught her four hundred jokes and at least nine of them work. We could raise an army by Saturday.”

“An army that keeps a secret?” you say, and there it is, the real question. Every kid you recruit is another kid who might ask why Madison's farm has the biggest grey patch and the loudest nighttime bell-sounds. Sera's safety against the town's — the Brigade's first hard choice, and it's yours.
