The Night of the Grey Tide

She answers on the dark of the moon.

It comes down out of the hills at midnight like fog with a purpose — grey in a wave, deeper and colder than anything the town has seen, and in it, around it, driving it like dogs drive sheep: wolves. Not five. Not a dozen. Every wolf Vespera has this side of the sky, flowing down Main Street while the streetlights forget what they're for, one by one.

The Brigade turns out in pajamas and boots — three whistles in the dark, squads to the square — and the kids of Maple Hollow make their stand around the bandstand with drums and paint and jokes told through chattering teeth, giving brightness hand to hand in a shrinking warm circle while the tide presses in. It holds. It barely, barely holds. But grown-ups are stumbling out onto porches into the grey and going quiet mid-shout, and the circle can't reach them, and the wolves circle wider, patient, cutting the town into lonely pieces — because that's the whole trick of the grey, isn't it. Separating.

What this night needs is something the grey cannot explain away. Something that makes every porch in town gasp at once, in the same direction, together. You know exactly what that something is, and she's a mile east, hidden in a cellar, kept secret through everything — and it would mean spending the secret entirely, in front of the wolves, in front of the whole town, forever.
