The Storm That Split the Sky Chapter Two · Through the Rift

Falling Up

You and Sera hit the gap between the tree halves at the same moment, and the world turns inside out.

Falling through the rift feels like falling up — up out of a swimming pool of night, with bubbles of violet light streaming past your ears. You want to yell but you can't remember which way your mouth is. Beside you, wrapped around you, is a warmth like sunlight and the smell of flowers that don't grow in your world, and that's how you know Sera hasn't let go of you.

Then, gently, as if the sky itself set you down, it's over.
