The Summons

The grey meadow at full dark is a bowl of nothing, and in the middle of it, the pack is waiting.

Nine wolves, sitting in a crescent like a jury of smoke, and before them stands one small figure — boy-shaped still, hands in his hoodie pockets, the bravest posture you've ever seen on anybody. You're flat in the last of the green grass at the meadow's rim, close enough to hear, because you followed — of course you followed. Friends follow.

The pack-leader speaks, and it is not entirely the pack-leader's voice. Something colder rides in it, relayed from far away, from a citadel of briars over the edge of the world, and the meadow's grey seems to lean in when it talks. “Scout. Nine days. You were made to find. What have you found?

Silence. The small figure's shoulders rise and fall once. And you realize, with your heart slamming, that you already know what he found and never reported: the cellar. The window. Her. He's known for days — you can see it in the set of his back, the answer he's been carrying like a stone — days of kickball and pancakes and not saying, and now the cold voice asks again, less patiently, and the whole crescent of smoke stands up.

He is one small almost-boy in a bowl of grey with nine of his own kind waiting, and whatever he says next, he says it alone. Unless he doesn't.
