The Last Road

No army goes with you. That's the strange, certain heart of it: this door only opens for small keys.

You cross into the Shimmerlands at dawn and ride east all day, and the world turns out to remember you. The singing meadow chimes as you pass. The ferns whisper your name ahead of you — kindly, for once, a rumor of hope running through ten thousand leaves. High up, a patrol of the Cloud Court dips its wings; at the Silverwood's edge a fox sits in plain view, tail curled, watching you go by with bright unreadable eyes; and where the grey country begins, the wolves come out to line your road — not hunting. Escorting. Word has moved through the smoke, wolf to wolf, of pancakes and refusals and a name called across a schoolyard. They pace you all the grey miles, silent, like an honor guard that hasn't been invented yet.

The citadel of thorns fills the horizon slowly, black briar-towers against a violet dusk. But you see it differently now than any army could. There, low in the wall: a culvert where a fox once waited. There, in the deep garden, faint as a match at noon: one small white flower, still blooming on a hill of forever-evening, tended by twiggy hands.

The gates do not open. They unweave — thorn by thorn, all the way up, a queen's whole armor unbraiding itself into an archway — because the citadel has been listening at its own keyhole for a very long time, and knows the sound of this key coming.
