Bramble's Bargain

“Hm,” says Bramble, in the tone of a jeweler finding real gold in a junk drawer. “Two true answers. The toll is paid.” He flows down off his stone — foxes don't climb down, they pour — and circles Sera once, sniffing at the grey streak on her flank. His ears flatten.

“Thorn-grey,” he says. “Vespera's own signature. It will spread, guardian. Slowly, because you are strong; certainly, because it always does. Salves won't touch it and sunlight won't scare it.” He sits, curling his tail over his paws. “Two things in this wood could help you, and I know the road to both — I said I was retired, not useless.”

He raises one paw, counting. “First: the Elder Willow, asleep these hundred years in the deep wood. She is the only soul alive who knew Vespera before — who remembers her true name. Wake her, and you learn how the Thorn Queen can be unmade. Or—” the second paw, “—the Thorn Road, to Vespera's own citadel. My nose says the Pearl never left her hunting grounds — she lost it in the briars the same night you lost it in the sky. Steal it back before she finds it, and the sky can be stitched whole again.”

“Wisdom or burglary,” Sera says dryly. “Every important choice comes down to one or the other.”

Bramble grins, all teeth and starlight. “Choose, travelers. The wood is listening, and so, I promise you, are the wolves.”
