The Story That Almost Worked
“Pony,” you say. “Rescue pony. She's very sick and extremely contagious and her sneezes sound weird because it's a — a bell cough. Ponies get it. You'd better keep back, honestly, it jumps to humans.”
It is, you think, a magnificent lie, assembled from nothing at zero notice.
Finn looks at you for a long moment. He writes something in his encyclopedia. From where you stand you can read it upside down: Possibility 18: Madison is hiding something AMAZING.
“Okay,” he says, way too easily, and hops off the fence. “Hope your pony feels better. Tell her ring-ring from me.” And he walks off down the lane, whistling, the whistle of a boy who plans to come back with binoculars.
You have bought yourself days at most. But days might be enough — because Sera's grey is spreading, and tonight two strange things will arrive almost at once: an old diary, and a silver piece of paper on the wind.
