What the Bracelet Knows
You walk the grey's edge in the early light, Sera at your shoulder, Nimbus trailing behind with Growler under his arm like a sulky pillow.
At the fence line you crouch and touch the last green blade before the grey begins — and your bracelet, your little star-charm bracelet from your mom, goes suddenly warm against your wrist. The blade of grass under your finger flushes greener. One blade. But you all see it.
“There,” breathes Sera. “That. Madison — what did you just do?”
“I don't know. I was… remembering. Mom gave me this the morning she taught me to whistle. I was thinking about that, and how the grass smelled, and—” The warmth fades. The grey holds its line, vast and patient, one blade poorer.
“Brightness,” Sera says slowly, like a scholar sounding out an old word. “Made brightness — memory and love, done with the whole heart. That's what pushes it back. One heart pushes back one blade. So the question, my dears, is how one gets hold of more hearts.” She looks from you to the farmhouse, to the town beyond, and her dark eyes begin — for the first time since the borderlands — to shine.
