The Herd-Mother’s Leap
“AURELIA!”
The herd-mother turns faster than anything that old should move, and meets the great wolf in the air above her daughter. The collision sounds like weather. When it's over, the wolf is smoke on the wind — and Aurelia stands over Sera with a wound of her own, a grey slash along her white shoulder, wearing the expression mothers wear when they'd do it again twice.
The battle is won. The trap worked; the pack is broken; the foals never woke. The Dawn Song's last verse washes Sera's flank clean and silver — and then falters on Aurelia's shoulder, because the herd-mother's grey is deeper, and older magic than a song may be needed, and no one says Vespera's name over breakfast.
The herd is saved and singing. The wolves are running. And the queenliest unicorn in the Shimmerlands now carries the Thorn Queen's mark, because you called for help instead of being the help — which any grown-up in two worlds would tell you was the sensible thing, Madison. Sera leans against you, warm and alive and whole, and you watch Aurelia favoring her shoulder, and you understand that sensible and finished are not the same word.
