Moonrise at the Fairground

The fairground at the edge of town has been empty since the county fair packed up in June — a field of flattened grass and one sad ticket booth. At moonrise, with you watching from the hedge, it stops being empty between one blink and the next.

It doesn't arrive. It unfolds — tents opening out of their own shadows, lantern-strings switching on in mid-air and then finding poles to hang from afterward, until a whole glowing market stands murmuring under the moon where no market was. The lanterns burn every color except grey. Music plays from somewhere that is probably not a place.

At the gate hangs a sign in the same moving ink as the handbill: THE MIDNIGHT MARKET — moonrise till moonset — ALL WELCOME UNDER THE LANTERNS — no iron, no shouting, NO HUNTING. (This means everyone.)

“The lantern truce,” Sera murmurs beside you. She insisted on coming this far; the walk has cost her, and she's leaning on the hedge more than she's letting on. “Old as the Market itself. Under those lanterns, nothing may hunt anything — wolf, hawk, or bill collector. I'd be as safe in there as in my mother's shadow.” Her dark eye slides to the darkness beyond the lantern-light, where — yes — wolf-shapes already sit at the field's far edge, watching, kept out by nothing but the truce and hating it. “Or I stay hidden here and you go in alone, small and quick and unremarkable. Both are true plans, Madison.”
