The Color Friendship Makes
You spend the last of the light experimenting, giddy as scientists, and by dusk you have it — the recipe, the actual rules, and you make Sera say them three times so you'll have them exact:
“One: brightness must be made with a whole heart — songs, colors, jokes, anything, but meant, not manufactured. Two: it must be given. Made FOR someone, or handed TO someone; brightness kept is a candle under a bowl, and the grey drinks it. Three — and this is the deep one, Madison — the giving goes both ways. What the grey can never hold is the color that appears between two creatures who choose each other. It isn't pink and it isn't gold; you'll know it when you see it; there is no word for it in either of our worlds, and Vespera's whole endless winter is that she believes it stopped existing.”
As if to sign the lesson, the aster in your buttonhole pulses warm — and where you've worked the boundary all evening, giving little brightnesses back and forth, the grey has fallen back ten feet in a long scalloped curve, without either of you painting a single thing at it.
A cure that any two friends anywhere can work, no magic required. It wants carrying now — spreading, teaching, giving, as fast and as far as feet can take it.
