The Gift Plan
The Brigade's new orders fit on one of Finn's notebook pages, and they are the strangest battle orders ever issued in Maple Hollow: Stop painting the grey. Start giving things to people.
Tilly paints — but now every painting is for somebody, delivered to their door with their name on the back. The Okafor brothers learn, in secret, the fishing song Mr. Otis used to whistle, and busk it outside his store until he comes out, stands very still, and then whistles the harmony he's been not-whistling for three weeks. Priya doesn't tell jokes at the bus bench anymore; she teaches the Tran twins to tell them — and the twins, armed, go joke their own grandmother out of her grey quiet. Milo carries Aunt Bee's honey to every porch on the north road with a word about whose bees made it.
And it works like nothing has worked. The grey doesn't retreat overnight; it retreats house by house, in scalloped curves, wherever the giving lands — and what comes back doesn't fade at wolf-tread, because it isn't paint on a surface anymore. It's between people, where paws can't reach.
By Thursday the town is more than half itself again, and the Brigade can feel the tide turning — which means, Sera warns from the cellar window, so can the tide's owner. “She'll answer this. Loneliness always answers, when the lights start coming on. Be ready for the biggest night of it.” Finn, naturally, has a readiness proposal involving his latest invention. It is a cannon. It fires glitter.
