Eight Stars

It begins on an ordinary evening, with your bracelet singing.

Not humming — it has always hummed, near Sera, near rifts, near wonder. Singing: all eight settings filled, all eight star-seeds alight at once, ringing together on your wrist like the smallest, brightest choir in two worlds. One from the sky trials. One from a dawn defended. One from a lullaby that unmade wolves. One from a flower planted on an evening hill. One from an honest bargain, one from a door opened clean, one from a town that glowed, one from a boy who chose his name. Eight roads walked. Eight bright things carried home.

Sera comes to the window without being called. In the dusk her eyes are enormous, fixed on your wrist, and her voice, when it comes, has bells and awe in it together.

“Rainstarter's people made that bracelet with eight settings, Madison, and even they didn't know for what. Now we know. Eight ways of loving the world, gathered in one place — that's not a charm anymore. That's a key.” She lifts her head, and looks east, past the orchard, past the split tree, toward a citadel over the hem of the world. “And we both know the lock.”
