Sunrise Cliffs
The Dawn Herd covers the cliff-top meadow like a field of pale flowers — a hundred unicorns and more, silver and cream and gold, foals asleep in the middle, sentries at the rim. When Sera walks in among them, the whole herd turns like a tide.
“Seraphina.” The unicorn who steps forward is taller than the rest, moon-white, with a mane gone silver-grey at the edges the honest way, from years. Aurelia. Herd-mother. Sera's mother. You expect ceremony; instead she presses her face to Sera's neck like any mother at any airport, and Sera makes a sound that is not dignified at all, and the herd politely looks at the sunset for a while.
The reunion lasts three minutes. The war council takes the rest of the night, because your warning lands true: Nimbus's information, Sera's borderland nose, and the herd's own scouts agree. The wolves are massing in the ravine below the cliffs, waiting for dawn — for the moment the whole herd faces east, throats open in the Dawn Song, defenseless as a choir. The sun in the Shimmerlands does not rise unsung. Vespera means to break the song, and the herd with it.
“So we don't sing,” a young sentry offers. “One grey dawn. We hide instead—” The herd shudders down its whole length. Aurelia only says, quietly: “We sing. The question is what else we do.”
